The Robie’s story began in 1953 when Robert “Robie” Russo and his wife Joyce opened a small store in Abbeville, Louisiana. Robie had a simple philosophy: “Sell quality products at a value, while providing the best personal service available.” In 1959, a second location was opened in Jeanerette, Louisiana. Then, in 1976, Robie’s sons, Bobby and Jim joined him in the business. ‘Robie’ passed away in 2003, but his spirit and philosophy lives on.
Even after 63 years of service, you can ask any Robie’s customer, and they will tell you that the company is known for quality, cleanliness, friendliness, and fast personal service. This is what sets Robie’s apart from its competitors. Customers are also drawn to Robie’s for its deep commitment to the communities in which they operate. “Our company has a strong community partnership with the local schools, churches, and youth organizations” say the Russo’s. “We are committed to our communities!”
Strategic planning is necessary to keep ahead of the fast paced changes that are happening in the grocery industry. Store managers and department managers have input into all decision making and promotional planning. Giving managers this autonomy gives a sense of pride and reassures them that they are a vital member of the Robie’s team. Teamwork is vital to the success of any organization. It is a team effort at Robie’s based on each member’s own ingenuity and skill.
According to Bobby and Jim, “Our mission is to “reinvent” our company to compete in the ever increasingly competitive marketplace, and establish the niche positions necessary to insure success in coming years.” Still, with the many changes that have occurred in recent years, the original philosophy still exists: quality, value and personal service!
